Abstract

Major rice growing districts of Himachal Pradesh viz., Kangra, Mandi, Una, Sirmour and Chamba were conducted during kharif 2010 to 2015 under Production Oriented Survey (POS) programme of All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project. The results revealed a changing scenario in the prevalence of rice diseases. It was observed that diseases like false smut, bacterial leaf blight and sheath blight which were predominant in tropical environment are regularly appearing in sub-temperate climate of mid-hills in considerable proportions. However, in districts Kangra, Mandi, Sirmour and Una, diseases like blast, false smut and bacterial blight were the most predominant ones during the period under study. The other diseases remained low to moderate with possible potential of resulting losses to rice production in the state under high severity. Foot rot of rice or Bakane disease which is also known as Rice Foolish seedling disease was observed for the first time from Indora block of district Kangra during kharif 2015 infecting Pusa 1121, a popular basmati cultivar.

Abstract

A field experiment to know the efficacy of some new fungicides against neck blast was conducted at Rice and Wheat Research Centre, Malan (HP) during Kharif 2014. New combination product of tricyclazole 18% + mancozeb 62% (MERGER) was found quite effective resulting in 72.6 per cent reduction in disease incidence over control, while application of tricycalzole 75 WP alone reduced neck blast incidence by 69.2 per cent. Another combi-fungicide, ICF-110 (tricyclazole 45% + hexaconazole 10% WG) also resulted in significant reduction (67.8%) in neck blast incidence over control. Also, the new molecules i.e. MERGER and ICF-110 significantly enhanced the grain yield as compared to rest of the fungicides with 192.5 and 176.1 per cent increase in grain yield over control.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to screen rice genotypes against sheath rot during kharif 2019 under natural epiphytotic conditions at the farm of Rice and Wheat Research Center, Malan. Out of one hundred eight genotypes, ten genotypes exhibited moderately susceptible reaction while ninety eight showed susceptible reaction when categorized on the basis of disease incidence whereas when these genotypes categorized on the basis of disease index, five genotypes showed resistant reaction, twenty four showed moderately resistant reaction, sixty one showed moderately susceptible reaction and eighteen genotypes showed susceptible reaction while none of the genotypes was immune in any category.

Abstract

Flag smut of wheat caused by Urocystis agropyri (Preuss) A.A. Fisch. Waldh. is an important seed as well as soil borne disease that is now emerging as a serious problem in Himachal Pradesh. During the survey of wheat growing areas of Himachal Pradesh, the highest average incidence of disease (17.77 %) was recorded from Thural of district Kangra followed by Akrot of district Una, Bhager of district Bilaspur and Dhaulakuan of district Sirmour with 14.65, 10.56 and 9.19 per cent incidence, respectively. The overall average disease incidence was significantly higher in 2019-20 (7.12 %) as compared to 2020-21 (5.97 %). The pathogen inoculum buried at 2 cm below the soil surface for 8 months yielded highest spore germination of 18.92 per cent and no spore germination was recorded till 4 months of storage due to the dormancy in any of the screened storage conditions.

Abstract

Sheath blight of rice, caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn (Teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk) is one of the important rice diseases after rice blast and is known to cause yield losses up to the extent of 1.2-69.0 per cent. For an effective management of sheath blight, different disease management approaches could be opted but the use of resistant varieties is considered as the most reliable one. Considering the importance of crop and extent of damage, a set of 50 rice germplasm lines was screened against sheath blight of rice, out of which 14 lines showed resistant reaction and 16 lines exhibited moderately resistant reaction, respectively. Rest 20 lines showed moderately susceptible and susceptible reaction. Rice germplasm lines identified in this study could be brought into rice breeding programmes after field validation.
